Kano School painting of a scene from the Genpei War (1180-1185) between the Taira and Minamoto clans in the late Heian era. This image is a popular theme showing the duel between Taira no Atsumori (in the water) and Kumagai Naozane. Kumagai, seeing the beauty of Atsumori, only 16 years old, the age of his own son, captured the boy and immediately beheaded him to spare him the indignity of further torture. Atsumori was known for poetry and playing the flute, and his story is one of the most moving in the tale of Heike. Brocade silk border with lacquered wood frame.
