Artist: 渡邊 公観  -  Watanabe Kokan (1877-1938)

  • Kokan first studied art at the Kyoto School of Arts and Crafts then joined Morikawa Sobun 森川 曽文 to study nihonga style painting. The Japanese painter was active mainly at Bunten (now the Nitten Exhibition 日展).
  • He formed the Japan Free Painting Club 日本自由画壇 with the mid-career painters Iguchi Kashu 井口 華秋, Ikeda Keisen 池田 桂仙, Ueda Banshu 上田 萬秋 and Hayashi Bunto 林 文塘 with the aim of producing free-style Japanese paintings. It is said that he became a personal admirer of Yosa Buson 与謝 蕪村 during his activities in the Jiyu-ga-dan自由画壇.
  • His real name is Kohei 耕平. His initial pen name was Shunsen 春泉, and other pen names include Kyogyodo 狂魚洞, Yugyodo 遊魚洞, and Daihushujin 大湖州人.
