Japanese antique low desk with beautifully figured Keyaki wood with a Shunkei lacquer finish. Finger joined construction.  In original patina. From Takayama in Gifu, Japan.

Takayama furniture features distinctive handles, or a lack thereof, in its construction. You will instead often encounter a drawer face with a large border; allowing for the drawer to be grasped from the middle section. 

Shunkei lacquering is a process in which a transparent lacquer is applied to wood that has been given a yellow or red tone.
