Artist Biography:
真野 暁亭 Mano Gyotei (1874-1934)
Mano Gyotei was an Ukiyoe artist and Japanese-style painter of the Meiji era. He studied under Kawanabe Kyosai 河鍋 暁斎, and was trained in the techniques of the Kano school 狩野派. Gyotei specialized in landscapes and portraits. He won prizes at numerous art exhibitions.
Note - An Otsu-e painting from Shiga Prefecture depicts the thunder god dropping a drum and desperately trying to pick it up. This suggests that even the most skilled can sometimes make mistakes. The composition of this work appears to have been inspired by that painting.
